Volvo Detours

Volvo

Background

A series where Craig Doyle takes a drive with someone well known and gets them talking about the turns that shaped their life.

We produced the series for The Irish Times Group Content Studio/

The Brief

Volvo didn’t want an ad. They wanted people to see what the brand stands for (safety, sustainability, human connection) without a car being sold at them.

So the idea was a conversation. Craig Doyle, a guest, and a road. Dermot Bannon, Conor Buckley, Rachael Blackmore and James Ryan each get an episode.

On the day

4 shoot days across multiple locations. The car is the set, which means small spaces, moving shots and very little room to hide. We opted for a car rig with cinema cameras rather than Go Pros for a better quality image.

Nothing in a car conversation works if it feels staged, so all the interview prep was done before the shoot and we trusted Craig to guide the conversations.

What we made

4 episodes of Detours, 15 - 20 mins each, cut for the Irish Times, YouTube and Spotify. 15" teasers also cut for each episode.
